From the moment you swing open the antique oaken doors and step into the main dining room, you’ll feel the history emanating from the very walls of this majestic hall. As you look around the great room you’ll be drawn to the interesting antiques, photographs, and vintage signs displayed throughout the restaurant. Above you spans the intricate pattern of the Victorian tin ceiling. The rich wood of the bar, the floor, and the railings reminds one of the classic pubs and taverns of Europe.
The Galley is situated at the epicenter of Historic Downtown Marietta, the first settlement of the Northwest Territory established in 1788 by an adventurous group of Revolutionary War Veterans turned Pioneers. Marietta became the gateway and model city of its time for what we now know as the great States of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
You’ll find The Galley to be a great ambassador of the delicious food and drink to eminate from what is now a vast cross-section of the American Mid-West and part of the country’s Breadbasket. Delectable meats, cheeses, breads and produce from this region are key ingredients of The Galley’s cuisine. The Galley also brings in the freshest seafood to round out the fare so there is something delicious for every palate. And don’t forget the beer! With a nod to our fellow Mid-Westerners of German & Belgian descent from the Great Lakes, we offer the tastiest, widest ranging selection of beers you’ll find anywhere in the Valley. Prost!
Nestled at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers, Marietta has always been a River City. Since the day the Pioneers stepped off of the small fleet of boats (two flatboats: The Adventure Galley & The Adelphia, plus three canoes) landing at the unsettled territories, riverborne commerce has been a life-sustaining force in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Marietta has long been the focal point of river life along the Ohio and has been oft visited by the great riverboats in the course of their journeys – The Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen, and the American Queen are a few examples. Every year in September, Marietta hosts the Sternwheel Festival honoring the Riverboat Tradition of the mighty Ohio and Marietta’s role in its history. Thousands of people from all over the world pour into Marietta to join in the fun and festivities.
In 1835, Marietta College was chartered to provide students with a contemporary liberal arts education. In addition to being one of the most beautiful small college campuses in the country, MC has a stellar national reputation and has perrenially been recognized “Best in Class” by the likes of U.S. News, Forbes, and the Princeton Review. So, not only do Mariettans enjoy a rich, enterprising history… they’re highly educated too.
The Galley is the preferred place to gather for Marietta College students and alumni. The Galley staunchly supports MC and is honored to be the “go to” establishment for the Pioneers and their families. Whether it’s graduation, homecoming, or just about any day of the week, you’re bound to run into a current, former, or future Pioneer at The Galley.
The Galley is a tasty part of Marietta’s rich fabric of tradition and excellence. In a place where “everybody knows your name,” you can’t help but feel at home instantly – especially while being served the Valley’s best by The Galley’s top notch service staff.
This is classic Americana, this is beautiful Marietta…this is The Galley. Welcome!
